People collect things to figure out who they really are and to remember their past. To keep special bonds between the family and friends. To have something they can talk and connect with, to laugh about, bring back old memories. They can collect to see who can get the most collectables for that group.

Collecting is important apart of an individuals life as it defines their personality, and attitude towards life. Everyone collects something in their life to express what they want to hold in their life. I collect coins as it is something that brings me back to my childhood.

mportant tips in this project are time management and proper group work. When working in such large groups it is important to evenly distribute the work, as well as, keep a good line of communication. Time management is another key tool. Video editing can be time consuming and difficult so it is very important to evenly distribute the work over time and not leave the project until the last minute. Asking specific questions is another good tip. In interviews it is important to be organized, prepared as well as accommodating. Instead of being very stiff with your questions include conversation in the interview to ease some tension the interviewee might have. These are common project tips yet they are very important in group project success.

This information on doll collectors is similar with the research I have found about tattoo collectors. The similarities are the thrill and addictive nature of collecting and accumulating. Both collections strive on quantity. Tattoos and piercings are always on display and is a unique collection because one carries it on their bodies at all times. I do believe the psychological root of both collections is similar however the tattoo collection brings in the interesting element of body image and body modification. Tattoo collecting has a very interesting lineage back to ancient times and has just recently had a modern appeal to all ages.

The difference between collecting and accumulating is interesting and there is a fine line between the two. It is also interesting how it is a modern phenomenon since our modern culture has such a large emphasis on material items and quantity .It is amazing how our society has assigned value to items in bulk even if by itself the item is worthless. People collect objects they love or have a connection with but they do not use them or appreciate their original purpose. They become relics and artifacts, which is almost hypocritical. It is also interesting to see how some women keep there dolls on display intergraded in the room and other in special boxes in isolation.

Response One

“The Collection Just Grows and Grows” discusses the passion and want of collecting certain items. The use of collection is also examined. Collectors can collect for presentation purposes or for everyday use. The representation of a collection as a biographic icon was also mentioned. Nostalgic meaning is found within these biographic collections that can tell the story of the collectors life.

Response Two

Our groups’ topic of shoe collecting relates to the article “Collection Just Grows and Grows” because shoe collectors tend to collect shoes for display purposes. However, the argument could also be made that shoe collectors use and abuse their collection in everyday use and functions. Some collectors take both examples and collect two of every shoe, one for display and the other for play.

Response Three

Group tips in finishing and exceeding with the group presentation include: 1) Assign different assignments to every member of the group. For example, one person may collect pictures, the other can create the text, and lastly, music can be done by the other person. 2) In the presentation itself, make sure it was rehearsed and previewed. Have everyone in the group contribute their voice to the presentation.

The Collection Grows and Grows highlights two major branches or aspects of collectors and collecting in general. The consumer culture that was spawned from industrialization created two breeds of collector. There are those who collect just to display and those who collect these items with the intention of playing with them. The branch of collecting that deals with actual interaction and playing with these dolls is generally accepted as the more childish in comparison to the more adult practice of collecting with the intention to display and not open these items. I personally can identify more with the practical collector who uses their collection, because it gives me a chance to use my collection in daily life.

Our groups topic of tattoo collectors is highly relevant to the central concepts brought up in The Collection Grows and Grows. Tattoos are a very unique class of collection in which the argument could be made that that collectors collect them only for display, but the argument could also be made that for the people who get them they serve a function in everyday life. I prefer to view tattoo collectors as the type of people who use their collections, equivalent to the type of collector that plays with their action figures rather than the type that leaves them sitting in the box. Just by stepping outside each day they are exposing their collections to the world.

1. Try to research background information on your topic before you go into your interviews. This can help with formulate better questions, as well as provide you with insight into your interviewee’s mind. By gaining a basic knowledge of the topic one can seem more knowledgeable and can help you connect more strongly with your interviewee.

2. Try to get as much footage as possible on your interviews. The more footage you have, the more you can choose from to create a stronger and more cohesive digital story. If you only have the bare minimum of footage, it may be hard to mesh and weave all of your interviewees together.
